About Friday Night Funkin'

In Friday Night Funkin', every argument is settled with a song. You play as Boyfriend, a young rapper who wants to date Girlfriend. Her father, a former rock star known as Daddy Dearest, does not approve, so he challenges Boyfriend to a sing-off. To win her over, you have to out-sing him and every rival who comes after him.

Created by ninjamuffin99, PhantomArcade, evilsk8r and Kawai Sprite, it first appeared on Newgrounds in 2020 and has since inspired a huge wave of fan mods.

How to play

Arrows scroll toward a row of four target arrows. Press the matching key at the moment each one passes over its target. A shared health bar shows who is ahead: land your notes and it swings your way, miss them and your rival takes control.

Story mode and Freeplay

Story Mode opens with a short tutorial and then moves through themed weeks, each with its own opponent and background. Choose Easy, Normal or Hard before you start. Freeplay lets you jump straight into a single song and practice it as often as you like.

Controls

Desktop: hit the notes with the arrow keys or with W, A, S and D, and press Enter to select. The + and - keys change the volume, and 0 mutes it. Mobile: this version is built for a keyboard, so a computer gives the best experience.

Tips

Start on Easy to learn the rhythm of each track before raising the difficulty. Listen closely to the opponent's turn, because you are trying to match what they just sang.

Good to know

The battles are musical rather than physical, yet the rivalry theme and teen dating story suit older kids and teens more than little ones.
